- Hearing Loss
- SYMPTOMS. In conductive hearing loss, transmission of sound through the
- middle ear and ear canal is impaired and the person tends to speak softly.
- In Sensorineural loss the person may not be able hear high frequencies and
- sounds like p, k, t and hard g.
- CAUSES of conductive loss may include the eustachian tube being blocked, wax
- or water in the ear, infections such as mastoiditis and otitis media or
- otosclerosis (the tiny bones become fixed in place and can not vibrate.
- Sensorineural loss may be from exposure to loud noises, complications from
- some diseases such as measles and mumps or sensitivity to some drugs
- (aspirin).
- TREATMENT. A hearing aid may be prescribed.
- .Surgery to replace the defective bone may be required.
